Thanks for sharing this Melanie. It's great to see some real live engagement. Do you prefer to have the students on FB rather than on a separate Student or class NING? The language was very interesting to me......as I don't MixIT.

Another methodology to use Social Media in the classroom

Learners had to do a listening assessment- I decided to allow them to translate their favorite song into Afrikaans, and then come and perform it in class for a mark. This activity included all four learning outcomes and various Assessment standards combined into one lesson- Making mince meat of the demands of NCS !
I do apologise for the quality- I had to use compression software :( Continue

How to use Social Media as a tool in teaching- Debate

This was one of my status updates on Facebook on Friday afternoon. One of my students responded to it,and it evolved in a debate. The same method can be used in twitter, to getting a stream of thoughts from students on almost every possible topic! It can be used to summarize content, work on a mind map for a assignment, it can also be used in brainstorming for a group project - the possibilities are endless!

A message from a child....

A message every adult should read, because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

When you thought I was not looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I was not looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I was not looking, I saw you make my favourite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special thing… Continue

Check out VuYou- great for video-emails and pod casts!

I found this application on Facebook- decided to check it out to see if I can use it for my teaching - I would like the students to record their orals at home, and e-mail or podcast it directly to my site, where I can review and asses it.
Oral presentations is always problematic for me during class time, as I am deaf in one ear, and my classes are very big ( some of them are 45 learners in a class), which makes it very difficult for me to keep them quiet in class.

This way, they can e-mail it t… Continue
